DON SILVER’S BIOGRAPHY

I’ve always written poetry, plays, fiction, non-fiction and songs, but out of high school, I followed a more traditional path and went to business school. During college, I played in and managed bands and singer-songwriters, and in the late seventies, Clive Davis hired me to be Manager of A&R (Artists and Repertoire) at Arista Records, finding songs for artists like Air Supply and Barry Manilow, songs which have haunted American couples and cover bands for over two decades. In 1982, I started a music production company, which produced a top 10 Disco hit, two rock albums and a studio album by the group, Orleans, which was actually never released because the record company went bankrupt.

In 1984, I returned to Philadelphia to work in my family’s manufacturing business where, over the next fifteen years, I held various positions that required long hours and a lot of travel. When I wasn’t working, I put my energy into co-creating and raising four children. In 1997, feeling the pull of writing once again, I enrolled in Bennington College Writing Seminars.

In 1999, we sold the family business, which freed me up to pursue the writing life. Since then, I’ve done many things for money. I was the Director of Temple University’s Family Business Alliance, I taught English Composition and Business Communications in Philadelphia area colleges, I advised numerous CEOs, taught guitar, learned fiddle, got remarried, and finished my first novel, Backward-Facing Man. I’m currently working full-time on my second novel.
